IRENE: “but I have taken a lot of chances in my life. I have…
One time I joined the circus. I have jumped out of a plane. I have just done a lot of adventuresome things because life is worth living.”

DR. CANDICE: “Absolutely. Wow. Joined the circus. I’m going to have to hear more about that later.”

IRENE: “That was a fun time I can tell you.”

DR. CANDICE: “I tell you, you know, it sounds like you’ve had a like wonderful, very active life.”

    TEXT ON SCREEN:
    RSV RESPIRATORY SYNCYTIAL VIRUS

DR. CANDICE: “respiratory virus and potentially serious. And I heard that RSV sidelined you.”

    IRENE: “It certainly did.”

DR. CANDICE: “Tell me about that.”

IRENE: “Well, RSV jumped on me about 5-6 years ago, almost 6 years now,”

    TEXT ON SCREEN:
RSV INFECTION IS USUALLY MILD BUT CAN BE SEVERE IN OLDER ADULTS

IRENE: “and I didn’t know what it exactly was. So it kept getting worse.”

    TEXT ON SCREEN:
Patient experiences resulting from RSV infection vary and not every patient experiences the same manifestations of RSV infection.

IRENE: “It made me cough. I felt weak. I felt like it was either breathe or eat, and I chose to breathe. I didn’t know what to do about it, so I went to the local little clinic and they didn’t know what I had. They tested me for the flu. I didn’t have that. They tested me for strep and pneumonia, and I left feeling kind of inadequate because I didn’t know what I had. I went to my family doctor finally, and he said “Well, you, I think you have RSV.”

DR. CANDICE: “Had you ever heard of RSV before?”

IRENE: “I had. My granddaughter, when she was born, she had RSV. I told him then I said, “No, no, no. Babies get RSV. I’m not a baby.”

    TEXT ON SCREEN:
EVERY YEAR APPROXIMATELY 177,000 ADULTS 65 YEARS AND OLDER ARE HOSPITALIZED IN THE US DUE TO RSV AND AN ESTIMATED 14,000 OF THOSE CASES RESULT IN DEATH.

IRENE: “And he said, “Well, you got RSV.”

DR. CANDICE: “I mean, you know, you’re not alone. A lot of people think that RSV is just for babies, just for young children, but they’re not aware of the potential seriousness for RSV for older adults. And if so, if somebody was listening, what did you miss out on during that time? What did you not get to do?”

IRENE: “In my time in life, I don’t want to miss a day of it. I like to be out of my house. I like to be out in the world doing something. And I missed out on everything.”

DR. CANDICE: “So Irene, what would you want to tell somebody who’s listening to your story right now about RSV?”

IRENE: “That this is a potentially serious illness. It sidelined me, and I wouldn’t want anyone else to be sidelined by this illness. I would tell them that I would not want them to miss out on the, the things that I missed out on. The days, the hours, the minutes, the, the being with your family. We should talk to our healthcare providers about it and they will help us make a decision on what to do.”

DR. CANDICE: “Well, I think your story is so important, Irene, and telling people about your experience. And you know, of course if people want to learn more and share with their family, we have a website, SidelineRSV.com, so they can learn all about RSV. Now let’s have some tea. Yes, it’s teatime. Cheers.”
